First non-doctor awarded Consultant Level 8 Practitioner Status in PHEM - West Midlands CARE Team

The West Midlands CARE Team is delighted to share the news that their Deputy Clinical Director, Mr Andy Thurgood, has become the first non-doctor in the UK to be awarded Consultant (Level 8) Practitioner status in Pre-Hospital Emergency Medicine (PHEM).  Andy is a consultant nurse and advanced clinical practitioner working in Emergency Medicine in the West Midlands.  He is an examiner for the Faculty of Pre-hospital Care, Chairman of the Faculty of Pre-hospital Care Clinical Standards Committee, co-founder of CitizenAid and Medical Director for the West Midlands Fire Service.

Dr Matt Boylan, the Clinical Director of the West Midlands CARE Team commented "We are very fortunate to have Andy as part of our clinical team and he has been instrumental in getting the team into the strong position it is in today. As one of a small number of pre-hospital services in the UK that promotes multi-professional involvement in PHEM, we are glad to have been able to play our part in supporting Andy in gaining this level of recognition. He serves as an excellent role model for pre-hospital clinicians up and down the UK, demonstrating what can be achieved through hard work, determination and passion for high quality patient care".

Until recently, experienced non-medically qualified pre-hospital practitioners, particularly from paramedic and nursing backgrounds, had been effectively excluded from having their experience and expertise formally recognised as being equivalent to sub-specialist medical practice. Through a new process, appropriately trained and experienced nurses and paramedics are now able to apply for recognition of their PHEM experience with the Faculty of Pre-Hospital Care and gain Faculty Accreditation as a Consultant (Level 8) Practitioner in PHEM.

After receiving his award Andy told us "Without a doubt, the professional development opportunities offered by the CARE Team, particularly for our non-doctor members, are unique. There are many immediate care schemes around the country but there are very few that actually offer multi-professional clinicians an opportunity to achieve advanced practice in PHEM. Whilst it is a great privilege to be the first non-doctor to gain this level of accreditation, it is much more important that I am not last and others must now follow".

Congratulations Andy from everyone in the West Midlands CARE Team!
